Trump Vetoes Bill That Would Require Congressional Authorization To Start A New War

Donald Trump appears to be setting the stage for war with Iran in his second term with his latest veto.

The war powers joint resolution was passed by both Democrats and Republicans. It demands the president follow article I, section 8, clause 11 of the US Constitution, which clearly states that Congress is the only power allowed to declare war.

According to a statement by the White House, Trump does not have to follow the Constitution when it comes to preemptively attacking Iran because of a dubious rule established during the Bush-era in the run-up to the Iraq war in 2002. The statement also claims that the joint resolution was a conspiracy by the Democrats to split the GOP as a personal attack on Trump.

President Trump was elected in 2016 in part as rejection of America’s hawkish foreign policy. Sadly, Trump has betrayed his voters and gone out of his way to risk a military conflict with Iran for the benefit of Israel — the demand of major Trump donors like Sheldon Adelson.

Trump’s position on Iran is extremely unpopular. 55% of Americans surveyed said the assassination of General Soleimani made America less safe, versus 24% who said different. 53% of Americans also support the vetoed resolution that would require Trump to get approval from Congress before declaring war on Iran, while 33% think he should be allowed to do whatever he wants.

In America, Sheldon Adelson and Jared Kushner alone get to decide when and if America, a nation of 330 million, is dragged into a third world war. Unlike with Trump’s immigration half-measures, there don’t seem to be any Jewish legal organizations rushing to file injunctions over this.
